“If you waste my time, you will have a full letter grade dropped from your average.”
Could I add that to the syllabus?
What if I specified what that means? Asking for help and then not taking my recommendations. Asking for make up work and then not doing the make up work. Asking for help and then not showing up.
It’s never been quite as bad for me as some people but one student didn’t show up after a 30 minute drive one way on the part of the teacher and one didn’t come after a 44 minute drive one way on the part of the teacher.

I realized I was going to be grading 25 students’ seven papers, plus four rewrites in 21 days of school. That would mean I would have over 250 papers to grade. I decided that was crazy. So I went in and got copies of other people’s summer syllabi.
We’re now going to be doing four papers. Two research papers, about six pages, and two formal essays, two to three pages long. We’ll still have two rewrites, of the long papers. And 14 read-write journal entries. And some pop quizzes just for fun.
I had to re-do the entire syllabus after it was already printed, but it is okay. It’s done now.
And it will be Heaven for me and the students.
